Rad Chad the Jellyfish
This term for inquiry we made wearable arts garments and went on trips to galleries around Wellington, and had guest speakers to help us with our garments. At the end of this inquiry we hosted a Wearable Arts show to present our costumes.
Rad Chad, Rad Chad is the name of Rove Elliott and Sam’s wearable arts garment. It is made of old green fishing net that we wrapped around our model to create almost a poncho that is made out of the green net. We then entwined shiny chrome paper into the net, we repeated this process multiple times to bushy layer of the paper which formed the outside of the Jellyfish. Now that the torso part of the garment was done I then went on to make a paper mache head piece, that we would rap the chrome paper around. We also cut out eyes for the model to see and stuck red cellophane on the inside of the mask.
Before the main wearable arts project we did dolly design to prepare for making our human size costumes. In dolly design we were given a doll, and a box full of different types of materials, some that were smooth silky and soft and other items were hard ridged and course. We brainstormed ideas for the dollu costumes, and later in the week we began to create them. Classrooms were flooded with materials scattered across the rooms. Everyone is working their hardest trying to complete their designs with the time limit of five days to finish their design. For this task I worked with Holly to create Jarrod the crazy flying alien filled with colours. We used old paint pallets to make a sphere that we put on the doll’s head. We also used CD’s as wings, the spiky ends of Christmas crackers for a skirt shaped styrofoam into rectangular prisms for the shoes.
During our wearable arts inquiry we had guests that had skills within the arts compartment. One of the speakers was Max who created “Solace in the wind” standing on the edge of the wharf. He taught us about making sculptures and showed us the process of making them. Vicky was another one of the guest who showed us some of her wearable arts garment and how different materials can be used in different ways. It was amazing that Vicky came into help us with our garments as her garments has won her some WOW shows.
In conclusion, this term we worked on wearable arts. We made costumes for dolls and human size costumes. Before all this we learnt about different properties of different objects. We also learnt about adhesives to give us knowledge on the best ways on bonding thing together incase we needed to.

Elliott’s Wearable Arts reflection:
Rad chad is themed by the plastic bags that jellyfish are constantly mistaken for.you might not know how they feel so how would you like it if I called you a hairless ape.yeah, you don't like that,so how do you think rad chad feels.
The process for making rad chad was simple,we got a fishing net and stapled chrome paper strips to it until it was fully covered.the hat was also simple,we did paper mache around a balloon and when it dried we removed it.but it was not done of the inside so we were set back another day.when it was done we got the same paper from the main piece and wrapped it around.
Wearable arts was interesting to say the least,my group spends 3 weeks making a jellyfish costume only to find out someone had messed up the times for the show and someone else wore it.as my “wise”brother would say,”classic clyde quay”.
My group worked very hard and we crashed and burned but in the end that's the learning experience.sure it sucks we have to put up with it.This was a huge milestone for me and i’ll be sure to do it again

Hannah’s wearable arts reflection
Wearable arts overview
This term our inquiry learning was about wearable arts and design. We have been focusing on being creative and coming up with good ideas. My team members Tom, Brian and myself made an imaginary character the Rainbow Lorax We chose this idea because we wanted to convey the message the we need to save the trees and the Lorax would do exactly that.
The process of ideas
The process that we went through was challenging because we had to think about how we would include saving the trees. We arrived at the idea after weeks of consolidating the thought of a Kiwi/Moa.
Taking to the stage
Taking to the stage had added pressure, we had not done any run throughs prior to going on stage for the real thing. Our team was further stressed because one group had mistaken our original mustache and eyebrows for something else so we had to scramble to find some identical facial features.
Problems and solutions
Creativity is just another way of problem solving. Our team had to invent some solutions for materials. One material put our piece together. This material was fluffy rainbow fabric. This want on the front and was also used as the facial features. One group wanted the fabric so we came to a conclusion that we would half it. We ended up using most of the fabric. Overall I am pretty pleased with the finished result.
Conclusion
In conclusion I want you to realise that creativity can be used by anyone you just have to put your mind to it and be open to all ideas. Always remember that creativity is all around you.

Wearable Arts-Mr Badman
We decided to create our scary character Badman’ to raise awareness of child kidnapping and how worrying it is for children and their families. We chose this issue because it has been going on for a very long time and children are precious and need protection. We should do a little bit more to help children stay safe and avoid being confronted by dangerous people.
Badman was made up of a vest, mask and sharp long claws. We made the tuxedo out of fabric we found in the art room it took a long time to find fabric to use to make our tuxedo and sleeves but settled on white sheet material that we dyed. We made an accent colour for The tuxedo and we also made sleeves for it and sewed them together.
Chuanyan made the long claws from cardboard we coloured them red to represent the scary and evil side to our character. The old nails were Stuck onto Sweeneys real nails with double sided tape and then chuan yan had an idea to make Some longer ones stuck to some elastic and put on around sweeneys writ like a wrist Band and which made them longer strong and more sustainable since we did not have To keep changing the tape.
The colours we chose were green black brown yellow red and blue and More darker colors to show how evil our creature is the mask took two attempts To make because if you look of the other side there is a failed attempt on trying to color it,it turned out looking like a pop tart so we just turned the mask over and tried again and Now it looks better.if we could change one thing about the mask we would not have used rainbow colors but we would have used skin colour but then again out creacher is not human and maybe we should keep it rainbow.
This is the blurb that we write and tim read out at the show: This costume is made by Chuanyan, Sweeney and Tim.This costume raise awareness of child kidnapping and how evil it is. we want to communicate the idea that children are precious and need protection. The material was chosen because it was dark like the creatures personality.
After showing you our costume we have something to say to keep you and your children or friends safer. Number one: walk in groups strangers dont target groups they target individuals rarely pares number two: your school and kids should know the stranger danger drill and the armed intruder alert bell at the school a drill on that more often so that they know what to do when confronted by a stranger or an armed intruder number three: your children should know safe places that are not home or school.

CRYPTIC INVERTEBRATE - SIENA’S REFLECTION:
This term we have been working on wearable arts. Wearable art is an insane, wacky outfit that is made out of absolutely anything and ends up looking phenomenal! I have never seen our classroom so messy and colourful before. I think it was a great fun way to spend a term and it taught me a lot about design and what I get to look forward to for college.
Our garment is called Cryptic Invertebrate which means strange creature with no backbone we chose this name because of our meaning- if you judge a person by their clothing you might miss out on an amazing adventure. We half came up with that, we chose a base quote and then changed the words to go with our message we tried to convey. The first thing you see on our outfit is a black cape made out of car inner tires and when you open it up it's a bunch of brightly coloured fabric sewn together into a beautiful creation. Under the cape we made a dress with cardboard bag templates, we also had a spiky black helmet made by paper mache to top it off.
Everybody in Rimu got put in a group of three and had to come up with a design that they were all happy with, there had to be no disagreements . Other teams garments were phenomenal and some of the most creative things I have ever seen, they all deserved their own spotlight and attention because of their fabulous looks.
Team work
Our team worked really well together and I think we were a very good combo, we all knew a very good range of things and I am so glad I got put into the team that I was in.
We all had our separate jobs to contribute to to get the job done. I am very proud of my group and all of our successes during this process, I am amazed and so super happy with the outcome!
Overall, I think this was a really inspirational and creative thing to learn and I couldn't be happier with how it went. WOW I would recommend to all of the bored kids in this world because you can make wonders with anything around you if you put your mind to it.

RAINBOW LORAX: Tom
In term 2 of 2017, each class at Clyde Quay School embarked on separate missions to create wearable arts garments. The senior’s theme was creatures. Within that theme, the students could choose any sub-theme they wanted, whether it be aquatic, equatorial, terrestrial or something else entirely. Following the construction of each garment, each class had their own ‘WOW’ show. Rimu and Ngaio’s show differed from the others by way of venue. While Karaka and Pohutukawa/Ngaio’s shows were situated in the school hall, Rimu and Ngaio’s was over the road was over the road at the tararua tramping club hall.
Group 3’s (from the seniors) idea began as a kiwi and a moa. This was to symbolise what happens to animals when they go extinct, hence the moa. This gives the message that we should prevent the kiwis from dying out. However, after some intense debating, Brian; Hannah and myself (Tom) dictated a change in the plan. We switched to a rainbow lorax.
We were inspired by deforestation, and how terrible it is. We wanted to communicate the fact that that deforestation needs to be cut short. That is why team 3 chose to construct a lorax. A rainbow one, to symbolise that hope that is remaining, and the trees that are remaining.
Our team delegated rolls to everyone so that we could get the work done faster. I set to work creating the t-shirt while Hannah created the pants. Brian was the test subject, standing around while we took measurements and things like that. We collaborated well, even though there were some minor squabbles about what the best workspace would be, and whether to have the doors closed or open.
The hardest thing was getting our nice quiet space (the breakout room) to stay quiet. Soon enough, people came streaming through, talking loudly, to get to yet another noisy room.
After we had made the bases for the pants and the shirt, we dyed them. We were slightly bored when it got to the drying of the dye. But we soon busied ourselves making eyebrows and a big bushy mustache.
Our work became slightly more focused once the dye had dried, and once we had moved on to the decorations.
When finished, the ‘Rainbow Lorax’ looked a bit like pajamas to me, but I suppose if you looked at it critically, it was good enough.
All in all, group #3’s work paid off. Our ideas worked, even though we made a few mistakes.

Wearable Art
Whole School WoW
Our school has worked on wearable art in Term 2 and working on how we are planning to make it, design it and how we are going to use the materials wisely. Our school has been inspired by Vicky’s wearable art piece. We also were inspired by a helmet that took a year to make. Seniors was looking at Juniors wearable art show in the hall and their theme was a superhero. We were surprised that they are very creative. We were inspired by what they make and different patterns that they think of. Our teacher was surprised too. After the Juniors wearable art show we had many ideas that came to our mind. Different patterns they did and what their movements on the stage. The seniors is so excited for the show. And we all want it perfect.
Dolly Design
Before we watch the whole school wearable art show, Seniors has made a design as a practice for our real design for our wearable art show. And that practice is for our dolls. We made a small dress for the dolls as a practice. Firstly we brainstorm and what our theme will be. Discuss with our buddy and listening to our buddy’s idea. After our discussion we start to design our wearable art piece. After you finish your design with your buddy we combine both of our design together as one. So we won’t fight over what we should do or what we shouldn’t do. When we finish our design we start to get our materials that we are using and what we can use it for. We all tried to finish it but some people were confused of what they are doing. So some people didn’t get to finish it. But it’s fine, the design were wonderful.
Ideas/Design/Materials
The ideas came from a guest called Vicky. She is a wearable artist and we were all inspired by her wearable art costume. She let us use her wearable art materials, it’s very kind of her to let us use these materials. The design was inspired by the little kid’s designs, patterns and different colours. Some of the materials are foldable or rippable and edible. That makes us happy, because we can change the materials into something that can inspire even more people to look at their wearable art costume. Some artists were inspired by other artists. We were all inspired by Vicky’s wearable art costume. After we viewed Vicky’s wearable art costume, we were surprised, and we wanted something just like Vicky’s creation.
Our message/Behind our costume
Our group has constructed a creature called “squifly”. Our message is “it doesn’t matter what you look like, it matters what's inside.” We want to let the people think that they are ugly, but that matters what’s inside your kind heart. Our message relates to our wearable art costume. Our progress was successful and we all finished it in time (before the show began). We didn’t use paper mache for our helmet. Instead we used pipes. When we were all nearly finished our wearable art costumes, I viewed a costume that one of my friends had created. I was so surprised that they used a hula-hoop and white fabric for the wings. There were very creative.
Guest: Vicky, Max, Kirsten, Justine, Marie
I want to thank the guests that came and helped us with our wearable art costumes. We all appreciate your helpfulness and supportive thinking when we were confused, and when we know how to do things. Vicky let us use her wearable art materials, and we want to thank Justine for coming to Rimu and helping us with things we didn’t know how to do. Thank you Vicky, Max, Justine, Marie and Kirsten for helping our school.

“Pania of the Reef” Laura-Rose’s reflection
Wearable arts, a subject just about everyone I know had dreamed of being involved in. THis term I was lucky enough to make a garment, although this took many attempts to get to our finished products.Like experimenting what we can do to change a household item into something new, trips for inspiration, practicing making an outfit on a dolly and lot’s and lot’s of planning.
I knew for this project I needed patience, because to make my outfit just right I needed to learn all the steps on how to be an amazing designer and creator, which ended up being a very helpful skill to have in the end.
When I had first discovered our theme “creatures”, I started having thoughts about different materials that represented a message that I felt strongly about.
It came to the day when we found out our groups, group 10 was called out “Eve,Laura-rose and Polina” when I was joined with my group I told them my Idea of “Pania of the reef” I chose this popular myth because the message she conveys is to keep our beaches and oceans clean and safe for our wildlife.
We decided to use the idea of pania of the reef we all combined our ideas into one until we had a perfect design.
I quickly realised that our group worked extremely well together whether everyone was here or someone was away we got through it together, through all the problems and all the achievements.
Writing our blurb felt natural to express,I was always confident to work harder than I was currently working.
Our group loved this experience and we are so grateful that we got a chance to make such an amazing garment!

Shark evolution lucas’s reflection
This term we are learning about wearable arts so me ros and dylan made a shark we call it shark evolution because we wanted to tell the world to stop shark finning or the sharks will be extinct in 40 30 or even 20 years from now Almost 100 million sharks are killed each year and many species too so I hope you enjoy my piece of writing.
Our shark garment was made from blue fluffy fur and the front was made from a white and rough material the head was made from a box of cardboard the eyes made from coffee cup lids the pupils are made from the same material is the front the teeth are made from packing peanuts and the side fins from a sponge and the back fin s not there because it got finned of so instead there is red transparent material
When I went on stage I was very nervous and I forgot what my first move was so instead I just moved the jaw everyone laughed so that made me much more confident when I whent to take off the garment I had to take a photo first and I took off the garment after that so I was relieved.
When we made the garment our teamwork was pretty bad but the teamwork got better over time I had to lay down on the white material so we could make sure the garment would fit me. I did the teeth and some sowing dylan and ros did the head the eyes and the ban shark finning sentence with scrabble pieces.
And that concludes my wearable arts writing I hope you enjoy AND BAN SHARK FINNING
Ashton’s Serval cats
My Outfit
Clyde Quay’s term two inquiry was Wearable Arts. My group decided to make an african serval. My group composed of Arlo, Jasmine and I. We then decided to combine our group with Liv, Hack and Freya. My group would do the adult serval and the other group would do the cub. I wa chosen to be the adult serval and Freya was chosen to be the cub.
My Message
My whole groups’ message (yes, all six of ours) was family. We also made the costumes different on purpose to show that there are different people in a people, but that doesn't stop them being a family
Teamwork
Since my group had six people, we had some arguments. Arguing over who did more work, over who should do what, but we got there in the end, We had a minor setback when the dye turned green, but we carried on any way.
Dolly Design
Before wearable art we did dolly design. We got a barbie doll (ugh) and had to make an outfit for it My one didn't turn out that good though We also went to The dowse and art gallery. We learnt about lots of art and had heaps of fun making hats
The show
The time had come for the big wearable arts show. I wasn't that nervous but I could tell some other people were. Backstage, the models (including me) lined up. I waited...and then I was on! It turned out way better than I was expecting and before I knew it, it was all over. I was sad that it was all over but at the same time sort of glad.

“You think I’m cute!?”
Term 2’s inquiry this year was wearable arts.
I was really confused when we started doing a science experiment, it was getting the fat out of milk. This didn’t help me one bit in our inquiry, plus I have already done this experiment before. Our second experiment was helpful, but no one used it in their inquiry. The experiment was adhesion, finding what can stick paper to paper using school ingredients. I liked doing the experiments because we didn’t get to do fun stuff like art every Friday.
My class Rimu, went to the dowse gallery to help and inspire us for our wearable arts. We can actually just use scraps to make a beautiful artwork. We made a hat out of paper but they were way more creative than a simple normal hat. We did this activity to tell us that we can make anything out of paper, this means we can actually just use scraps to make a beautiful artwork. We also learnt how to pick and skin harakeke. This inspired people to use harakeke in their outfits because 2 groups used the harakeke in their outfits.
I felt like my team was making most of the decisions, but I did make a few decisions. This is because I don’t really like my outfit well I do but it isn’t my type of genre. Our teamwork/collaboration was pretty good, no fighting or big disagreements.
Our outfit is entitled ‘You Think I’m Cute?’ We have chosen this name because since Rimu have been tracking and trapping pest’s lately, we thought this message is relevant. The message behind this title is don’t judge an animal by it’s cuteness. We used scrabble pieces and a pillowcase to create a word find, people can read words like murder or evil, all tied to the word rabbit. The main part of this outfit is the creepy bunny mask, but my favourite piece is the cape because it is not creepy. With the cape we thought you couldn’t dye it with school bye because it is linen, but we did heaps of research but ended up using the school dye. We left it overnight at school soaking in the bucket of dye, it worked and it is a nice bluey gray cape.
Overall I thought this journey of mayhem was fun and interesting. I am actually quite happy for my group because we have made a piece that is different to others. One more thing is I want to say thank you to Vicky, Kirsten, Max and Marie for coming in and helping/sharing tips and their skills with us.

Yr5-8 WOW Show
By Brian
You may have seen our school’s Year 5-8 WOW show, or you might have been at work, or at home sitting down on the couch watching TV. Either way you may be wondering how we got these Marvelous ideas (Or not) because we did not cover all that much in our tiny blurbs. This article will cover a lot of these questions(Or not).
Scientific areas
(This only applies for the year 7\8 as far as I know)
At the start of this inquiry we had a few `science experiments` about material properties, physical versus chemical change and adhesive substances. With the adhesive substances test we messed up a bit, so I guess you could say we were in a `sticky situation` (Pun intended). This taught me us how pick ourselves up from failure, for it was a skill we needed, because we knew we would fail time and time again.
The message development
We all sent a message of sorts. Even the Year 5\6’s sent a message that is important, like the amount of waste technology causes, to people covered in balloons to show lollies aren’t just for eating. People sent messages to save our world and it’s our duty to respond.
Trips
We had a few trips to art galleries like the Dowse gallery in lower hutt to get information to use in our creations. These tips were essential to us as we couldn’t have known how to bind items in certain ways or ways to send our message.
4Garments
We all have outfits to be proud of, like Rad Chad the jellyfish. The silver material makes a smooth rustling sound that could represent the sea on a breezy day just as well as it could represent the jellyfish’s tentacles calmly waving around a sit drifted through the reef. With the Hast Tiger Eagle (HTE), the polar bear top is just as fluffy as a real ones pelt. The eagle mask looks so alike to an eagles head that you would think it was made by a professional
Conclusion
There were pros and cons, we had to be flexible with our thinking and couldn’t lose focus if we wanted to get the job done. I hope this answers your questions and that you will respect the amount of time and hard work put into these garments and that you’ll react and do your part in making the world a better place.

Creature from colour land.
My favourite parts of our costume were the glasses and wings. The glasses were one of my faves because of the slightly bewildered appearance they gave off, as well as being so unique. My fave part of the wings was how we wet the streamers so the colour soaked into the wings, giving them a double sided rainbow effect.
The glasses were brought from home, had the lens popped out and replaced by paper and see-through plastic With styrofoam strips to make giant top eyelashes. The bottom part of the glasses were the ends of cables that were no longer used. The lips were made of hot glue in a mould, until we took them out of the mould and painted them red.
The skirt was a party tablecloth-there's nothing else to be said about that. Another thing that doesn't need much explanation Is the dress. It was a kapa haka dress until we got it. Then we glued we glued silver stuff on it and it then it became a kapa haka dress with silver stuff on it. Mucho of the difference.
The helmet was paper mache with glitter. The antenna are totally different matter though. Every single one is unique, made by me. They are made of balloon sticks, pipe cleaners and other stuff such as streamers, silver stuff, tiger fabric and bookbinders. And some more pipe cleaners.
The Wings, though. Well, for the wings, we got a flat styrofoam sheet, some scissors, a glue gun, a party tablecloth, a rubber-like black tube material and finally a broken hula hoop. We also grabbed a roll of duct tape and some blue cone thingies, before we (or, more accurately, Holly) set off to create the wings. The wings are sheets covered in streamers with the pre mentioned silver stuff along the top.We sewed the wings on to Hula Hoop halves, we stuck the hula hoop halves into the cones, Get some streamers onto the sheets, the wings to the styrofoam, cut the corflute, and stuck it onto the styrofoam. After that it was simply a matter of adding the tablecloth on top of the cones, and getting the black stuff on.
One of the people who helped us the most was Vicki. She helped Holly do the wings. Another part of the costume was the tail, which took me about 45 minutes, 20 of which was spent cutting corflute.
Wearable arts this term have been really fun. One thing that was good, for example, was that we were working together with people we didn't work together with much, and it was great how many awesome pieces of art we all produced.

Creature From Colour land Wearable art reflection -Holly
This term the whole school has been doing wearable art. There has been one heck load of mess. Wearable art is when you get creative and you make a costume out of anything you want. The senior theme was creatures. There has been a lot of challenges, a lot of disagreeing but everyone's finished outfit has turned out amazing.
My team's outfit was called Creature From Colour Land. We got our idea for the name because it was the craziest costume I have ever seen. With long antenna sprouting out of the head that had sparkles and streamers running down from them. The wings were rainbow tie dyed stripes stuck onto a sheet that hung down, drifting in the wind. The disco ball chest piece was so shiny that when you walked into a room, the whole room lit up. One of my favourite things that my group made was the glasses. They had the hugest eyelashes that I have ever seen that made the creature look so weird and confusing that you could never guess where it came from.
Coming up with the ideas was not what my group was great at. We got there in the end but we didn't have an idea straight away. I think my group needed a little push from me to get into it. Moving forward in my group I soon realised that I needed to be the one that kept them on topic and gave them jobs to do. I did not mind being that person most of the time, but sometimes I found It a struggle when a person in my group went off topic. Looking back at that I think that giving my group instructions and checking on them was a great leadership thing to do. I think it pushed them to do great things. I’m proud of my group for getting more resilient and finishing the jobs I set for them. For example I asked Frank to make the antennas really crazy. I gave Frank some materials such as pipe cleaners and book binders, he did a superb job.
I remember feeling bad because I thought that I was coming up with all the ideas, I thought that I was hogging the group but now I think that it's not hogging if no other ideas are being shared . If the group is ok with the idea then it's having a discussion and coming up with great things.
There was a lot of time spent getting ready for wearable art, learning lots of things we might need to know when we got into making our extraordinary outfits. Some of the preparation activities was going to the Douse gallery, doing a adhesive experiment with glue, see how we can use materials in different ways such as plaiting, knotting. Also we did a task called Dolly Design where we had to brainstorm and create an outfit for a doll to practise making outfits for humans. All this was a big help. I think my outfit would not of been the same without doing all of those things because I wouldn't know how to bind my materials together in the right way so that it doesn't fall apart.
I want to say thanks to Vicky, Marie from Kowtow, Max, Kirstin, Justine, Sandy and Tandi for helping Rimu and Ngaio to help make our wearable art. Also a special thanks to Vicky and Marie for helping with the construction on my groups wings. If we didn't have all the people helping us our outfits would probably fall apart.
Term 2 was the most creative I have been so far. I am happy that we did wearable art this term because I think that it was bundles of fun. I loved being able to get creative and make something phenomenal out of whatever we wasnt. I would definitely try this again and I think everyone should give it a go.
Sean’s Wearable art reflection!!!!!!!!!!!!
Over the past term pupils at Clyde Quay school have been doing wearable arts. In year seven and eight our theme was Creature. For the first four weeks we worked on material properties and uses. In week five we did an activity called dolly design, and in weeks six to ten our class did our main human sized costume.
Liquid, solid and gas are all properties that we learnt about in the first four weeks. Throughout this time we also practised describing different materials. One activity we did was where we had a bag of materials that we had to describe ,some were rigid and rough where others were soft and silky.
Tom and I collaborated on a task called dolly design, this task is where we got a doll and created a wearable art for it to wear. Our theme was victorian ages we used light and dark blue bottle top and a blue fabric. Everything was frantic, materials were sprayed across the classes. With only five days to complete our task everyone was racing around to have a costume to show at the end of the week.
Sean,Kolya and Jackson, composed a garment called Batman. Unlike the superhero this was a real New Zealand short and long tailed bat, with Jackson as our model. Our pledge was for people to realize that this mammal is our taonga*not our enemy. Our head piece is paper mache covered with a brown furry fabric , Our eyes are made out of coffee cup lids and our snout is made from a coffee cup lined with a black mesh. The vest is a black fabric sewn together at the back. The wings are a black house wrap, and the tail is made from the same brown furry material as the head piece. The shoes are made with cardboard and a black fabric.
I got a lot of inspiration from Max Patte , Vicky and Justine. Max a sculptor , is famous for his piece solace in the wind , otherwise known as that naked rusty guy on the waterfront by te papa. He talked to us about his process and struggles through making the piece. Vicky a WOW winner came to talk about her creations and the different ways you can interpret wearable arts . Justine talked to us anbputthe different uses of materials, and how her creations are being showed in galleries in Australia.
My heart was beating like a butterfly, I guess that's why they call it butterflies in your stomach, but this time it was terrorising my chest. As Jackson started to walk up the steps I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Ngiao did it effortlessly. I tried again, then suddenly, ¨The Batman¨ the crowd erupted for which felt five minutes. After the few seconds the audience finished and I continued to speak. Throughout the show characters danced on stage and readers explained the garment. Colours were flying everywhere. At the end I became sick of clapping.
At first , I thought Wearable arts would be pointless and we wouldn't learn anything. But I learnt that it is greatly involved with science and sustainability, and I have definitely learnt a lot in these subjects. I have found out that wearable arts are extremely fun to create and make. And I know coming out of this I have made two new friends.
Wearable arts reflection by Liv
This term we focused entirely on wearable arts.We had the whole day focused on wearable arts which I loved because we got a break from normal school work to be creative. We worked on this 3 times a week and we only had eight day to design, build and write for our wearable arts.We designed the outfit which took several tries before we came up with the final design entitled family matters to show how babies or cubs rely on their parents protection then when they get older they become more independent this is showcased in our mask because the cubs mask is hard and made out of paper mache and the adults on has less protection because they don't rely on their parent as much any more. Then w build the outfit and finally we wrote blurb that informed the audience about our piece while it was onstage.
Our wearable arts piece was originally a household cat.And our message was trying to inform people that new zealand natives and getting killed by household cats and that we need to keep track of them before it's too late.although ⅔ of my group liked tis idea we had to change it because that ⅓ didn't like it.Luckily we came up with idea that was similar but not exactly that same that all of my group loved which was making two servals cat and cub. When we were building it, I looked at other people's outfits and I felt that we needed more colour although my group disagreed I'm sure that if we did it would looked 10x better. That why my favorite was creature from colour land because it was so incredibly imaginative and creative.
The guests that came were very helpful with our design.I believe that without them we would not have as great of outfits that we have now.The process that max patte used inspired us for our mask.and without the materials Marie provided we wouldn't have an outfit. And if kirsten hadn't sewn our garment it would rip.
The trips we went on played a big part in our design even if we didn't know it yet.we made hat which we designed and little did we know that was the first step.we paired up and found material around the room.Me and my partner Ros designed a crown that used little silver hearts that showcased our love for food.
As we performed our piece I felt proud.Proud that we finished and proud that it worked. My favorite part of our outfit was the mask it show the message the most and even though it took the longest it was definitely worth it.Overall this term has been great and I have loved it! By Liv
Wearable arts Reflection by-Ros
As soon as I stepped out of the bus my eyes didn't know what to look at. Things everywhere. We went to the douse gallery because we were doing our enquiry on wearable arts we jumped on the bus wondering what's going to happen. The douse gallery was in lower hutt by a massive park when we arrived, Jolie came out jumping with Joy, she told us she was showing us around. First off we went into a arts and crafts center where we were going to make paper hats you could choose to do it yourself or with a buddy I chose to buddy up with Liv. there were so many things to choose from making our paper hats my hat turned out with Love hearts all over it to show our love for food and triangles on the top a bunch of other people looked liked a mad hatter's tea party.
We were finished we went down stairs go the park where there was a heap of baby ducks. We followed them down the river than we went over to a flax bush and Jolie talked to us about the history the flax. We walked back to the gallery and ten Jolie showed us how to scrape a flax with a knife you only scrape the top till all the skin is gone it turns into something like a paint brush which felt really nice on your skin.
Also we had a big tour on what's in the gallery, the thing that catched my eye was a blanket looking thing which looked like it was falling apart it curved around wand was very long it hwnged down down the wall which gave me a lot of ideas.
As we went back to school I was really excited to tell my team about all my ideas at the end of discussion we came up with an idea that I want really happy with but I keep going and I was happy with our end design. I'm glad I kept on going even know I wasn't happy with the end idae it showed how it doesn't have to be your idea to be great
In conclusion
My group did a good idea and the message was that sharks should not be fined we should treat them the way e like to be treated.
Nathaniel’s Wearable Arts Reflection
A gasp of Horror as the audience rested their eyes on the bloody rabbit covered in torn flesh. The beady red eyes stay straight into your soul. You never know when she might rip out your tongue. In a flash of light, she disappeared only leaving words written in blood:
I am coming for you.
We started by studying adhesives and by using chemical reactions to stick an envelope together. During this task I realised that the material you use adhesives on can make an extreme difference. After this I got assigned to make a garment out of recyclable resources. We thought the best idea was a meaningful idea, so we came up with the pest.
Solace in the Wind, a magnificent statue leaning into the wind looking out upon the harbour. The creator, Max Patte came and taught us the ways of the statue. We learned from sculpting little sized statues to elephant sized ideas. After this the kids in Karaka and in Harakeke made a show. The little kids had heaps of creativity and seeing the confidence with which they owned the catwalk inspired me.
I think the wearable arts unit has had a huge effect on me and I have now been thinking about bringing it into a choice for my future. New Zealand is very magnificent by enforcing kids to do things like this, overall this term has been a blast, I love herbal arts and hope to do it again.

We started the making of garments for wearable arts in week 7.
We had 8 days to complete our garments.
The work was difficult, but my team finished everything that was needed.
We made the garments for a WoW show which my team-mates didn’t turn up to.
But I did alright.
So here’s the remainder of the details at WoW.
The WoW show wasn’t nearly what I thought it would be.
I thought of cool designs.
And outta this world things.
However we marly got trash and mixed that trash with other trash.
My group made a jellyfish named Rad Chad ( best name ever ).
It was sort of fun building Rad Chad.
The process to make wearable arts was interesting so was the rest so not much else to say about my thoughts.
The making of Rad Chad.
We had the name since the beginning Rad Chad the snow man.
Yes we were trying to make a snowman and then bam!
Rad Chad the jelly man was born it was a massive fail but Rad Chad looked cooler than ever.
We got fishing net and silver paper and we added the paper on for the tentacles.
The bad thing was he was super noisy we had to yell our blurb out.
We also had to write a blurb.
Back to Rad Chad.
Sam made a paper mache helmet that we put on Elliott he was the model I added paper to the head.
Then bam a head!
It took three days for the paper mache to glue to dry.
And on those 3 days I was sick at home. So Rad Chad was fairly easy to make it took days though.
CROCODILE COSTUME By William
During our wearable arts, Lexi, Mihir and I made a crocodile costume over a few weeks or so. It had a head wrapped in fabric, a body wrapped in fabric, and a tail wrapped in fabric. It didn’t turn out very exciting, because everything was just green fabric, and the decorations were poorly done - but hey, it worked.
The crocodile’s body is made of a polystyrene frame wrapped in a fluffy green fabric (which is not a big surprise), and it is attached to the head which is made out of a coat hanger sellotaped to green cellophane. In the mouth, there are teeth which is made out of a cardboard which has a silver coating on top. The tongue is made out of
In our group, a few things went wrong - notably our first head for the crocodile which was way too small for the model, and also - there were a handful of disagreements about the art.
Before our wearable-arts, we experimented with adhesives by mixing solid powders with water (cornflour, cellulose, wallpaper paste powder, flour, and aloe vera which was a substitute for tree sap) and seeing which one works the best.
This term for inquiry we focused on wearable arts. Wearable art is a garment which is creative, original, inventive and for the most part aesthetically pleasing. For roughly a week we spent the entire day painting, cutting, glueing, sewing and overall being creative. Never have I seen the classroom so colourful and chaotic.
Fleur’s Wearable art reflection
As a group my team decided to create a garment which was characterized by a peacock. We turned a plain white sheet into a colourful tie dye dress. We handcrafted peacock feathers and used corflute as our base, then applied a range of smaller accessories. We chose the name “majestic ethereal” because we thought it was the best way to describe our garment. The definition of this name is something or someone who is beautiful graceful and delicate, somewhat like a peacock itself.
A challenging essential to regard was staying sustainable. It was difficult to find alternatives to non environmental friendly materials. Having tape, glitter and other non eco friendly materials and being restricted to a very small limit, or even not allowed to use any was not an easy thing to do.
To strengthen our understanding on the science part of it all, we spent a few examples include mixing casein and baking soda, wallpaper paste and water, flour and water and aloe vera. The aloe vera had the least success. It’s adhesion barely worked. However the wallpaper paste undeniably was the best. In my opinion it worked better than a regular glue stick. These experiments came in handy when we needed a different source of glue.
As a result, the process of making the garment required lots of perseverance. There were a few obstacles but ultimately all the designs were fantastic.
In term 2 we worked on wearable arts. Our one was a bat, bringing the message that they are special and we should treasure them because they are the only mammals capable of full flight and many other things that make then unique.
The first time we talked about bats was when we were looking into pest control.
In the next 5 paragraphs I explain what I found easy, hard, and some other stuff.
The easiest thing we did was probably putting the eyes and the fur on the helmet, with it only taking a quick drizzle of hot glue.
The hardest bit was putting black material on the back of the wings. We had to cut it up, plan where to put it, plus, I hate some close calls with the hot glue, but I did it anyway.
The workload was evenly spread out between the group.I’d say I did about 30% or the work with a good attitude.Next time I think I could do just a little it more and be guided a bit less.
Overall, we did well as a group. We got stuff done on time, and we could all agree and compromise.
